Wrestling is the most popular combat sport. It is also getting popular in schools and colleges. But, of course, one of the roadblocks when trying to do wrestling is pain. Since wrestling is a sport and we see wrestling matches on TV, it does seem to hurt a wrestler to fall on a wrestling ring. But does it hurt to fall on a wrestling ring?

It hurts to fall in a wrestling ring since it is made with hard materials. The outer cover of the wrestling ring is made out of hard foams. Underneath the hard foams are plywood and steel beams. These hard objects can make falling on the ring hurt. Especially some wrestling moves can inflict pain.

To find the answer, I have researched the materials used to make wrestling rings, moves that can hurt a wrestler, and what we can do to avoid injuries. Let’s start.

This should be pretty self-explanatory when you hear the superstar’s bodies crashing against the stairs, floor, and metal chairs.

In a match, a few elements are stated as a result and what moves will be performing in the match.

Usually, wrestlers try to put as little pressure on their grapples and strikes as possible to prevent their opponent from hurting.

Contrary to popular belief, the ring floor is a very firm surface to land on. And if we talk about the ring ropes, they are also just as tight – propelled through them can also be painful.

But in a wrestling match, not everything happens according to plan.

Sporadically a wrestler may be injured, whether kicked, with an unconscious punch, or falls from a height that can break their bones.

Thus, falling can break something important, including the neck or spinal cord.

After that comes the springs, the essential part of the ring.

A backhand chop is a form of attack that wrestlers make by hitting their opponent’s neck, shoulders, chest, or back by using the rim of his hand.

There are numerous distinctions in which a WWE wrestler can give chops to his opponent with full power. 

DDT

DDT is a move where the wrestler catches his opponent in the front fork and then falls backward or down to put the opponent’s top on the ground.

It can damage the head or neck of a person with DDT if not acted upon with great care.

Cross Rhodes

Cross Rhodes is also known as the final move.

It is a rolling cutter. In the act, the wrestler stuck his opponent’s head below his left arm and grabbed his right arm by his right limb.

After ramping anti-clockwise for some speed, he rotates it clockwise and hits them on the floor. Cross Rhodes can be painful.

Things to do to prevent Injury when Falling

There are many things you can do to prevent injury when falling. The easiest way is to always wear safety gear such as mouth guards, headgears, ankle pads, and knee pads. Also, there are other things you can do to prevent injuries, such as strength training, flexibility training, and regular check-ups.

Wrestles can do many things, which are helpful to prevent them from severe injury when they fall on the ring. I have listed a few of them:

1. Wear Safety Gears

During the wrestling, wear mouth guards and headgear. They can assist in preventing head, tongue, tooth, and ear injury.

2. Train during the pre-season

Strength and cardio training before the start of the wrestling season make sure that the athlete is in good shape.

Building flexibility and strength in the hamstrings and quadriceps can help put off knee issues and other common wrestling injuries.

3. Use padding and braces

When wrestlers come in the ring, they may have any injury in which joint and shock injuries are more common.

So proper elbow, knee, and ankle gear help absorb and reduce this type of injury.

4. Eat and drink properly

Wrestlers are mostly under pressure to assemble specific crash diets and weight loss classes, leading to dehydration or illness.

It is imperative to monitor young athletes and learn how to control their diet safely and adequately.

5. Shower before and after the match:

Wrestlers can prevent infection before starting matches or training with excellent hygiene.

It is recommended that you wash hands often and never share personal stuff, including razors, towels, and soap. Moreover, basic cleaning habits can reduce the chances of spreading and getting common skin infections.

6. Strength and Flexibility Training

Shock with mats, twisting of arms, and restraints may lead to shoulder displacement in wrestling.

The shoulder may be slanted (partially removed from the main joint) or dislocate (entirely removed from the main joint).

Not only that, ligaments and connective tendons may be torn and damage shoulder injury.

Therefore to avoid it, strength and flexibility training is essential.

Lifting weights and stretching can assist in reducing these injuries.

7. Proper Check Up Even On Ankle Sprains

Wrestlers may experience three degrees of ankle sprain, including:

  • 1st degree:  Injure a few ligament fibers.
  • 2nd degree: Severe damage to the ligaments.
  • 3rd degree: Entire ligament rupture with bump and joint dislocation.

The first symptom of the sprain is swelling, whereas a more severe sprain may cause a wound.

Swelling can be treated with elevation, ice, and rest.

When the swelling subsides and walking becomes more comfortable, then it begins to heal.

Besides, wrestlers should stretch their ankles before the match to endorse flexibility in the ligaments.

That’s why even small things such as sprains should be checked with a health professional. These minor injuries could lead to larger ones if they remained unchecked.
